There are three basic ways information is sent over the internet

http is "hyper text transfer protocol" and is used by browsers to get information to and from you.

smtp is "simple mail transfer protocol" and is used to send emails

ftp is "file transfer protocol" using either the ftp command at your command prompt or an ftp program you can upload and download files from a server, it’s the most popular tool for web developers and is standard in most non-crappy hosting packages. A package that doesn’t allow ftp would mean to upload your files you’d have to use an http form (think like, uploading pictures to photobucket.)

FTP = file transfer protocol. It is used for centralized file hosting. You can use it for a lot of different things but for the most part, it’s used to hold files that multiple people need to access. It’s nice because you can grab files from an FTP server no matter where you are as long as you have internet connection. AND you can also upload to the FTP and people can get it the second you are done uploading.

It would be used for uploading and downloading files, you can do the same with a typical web hosting. But an FTP server allows you to use more than a browser to get the files, specially FTP clients with many special features for FTP.

File Transfer Protocol. It is one of the original P2P File sharing systems. It works well with Files that are to large to email to a remote computer as it does not time out.

I used FTP for authoring/editing the website for my business.
I didn’t really understand it, but it worked.
